YUAN: Zhi Yuan (Khubilai Khan), 1260-1294, AR 50 tael sycee (1894g), year 14 (1273), dated the 14th year of the Zhìyuán era, a rare salt tax sycee inscribed with denomination at upper left and ruler's name and date at lower center, inscriptions in grass and orthodox style scripts, inscribed yuan bao [Treasure of the Yuan (Dynasty)] cast into reverse, VF to EF, RRRR.

OTTOMAN EMPIRE: Süleyman I, 1520-1566, AV sultani (3.48g), Baghdad, AH(9)42. A-1317. NP-160. Artuk-1531. This is the first Ottoman issue of Baghdad, conquered by the Süleyman in AH941/1534, Fine, RR.

This coin dated AH942 is the first Ottoman Gold coin minted in Baghdad. The inscriptions on this type are different from the usual sultanis for Süleyman. Titles includes the phrase, "Protector of the two Sublime Holy Places" (Hadimul Haremeynishsherifeyn), i.e., Mecca & Medina. This example differs in the arrangment of the obverse and reverse legends slightly.

A similar Baghdad AH942 sultani was sold at the October 2006 Gorny & Mosch sale 153, lot 4986 and fetched $10,000 plus commission. Thier example had no date visible whereas this example has partial date visible.
