BYZANTINE EMPIRE: Heraclius, 610-641, AE follis (16.91g), Jerusalem, year 4 (613/614), S-852B, DN HERAC LIUS PP AVG, crowned bust, facing, holding eagle-tipped scepter / M for denomination (=40 nummi), ANNO to left, II II to right, and IEROCO mint name below, nice strike, with minimal weakness, one of the finest known specimens, as most known specimens of this extremely rare type are poorly struck and often badly preserved, About VF, RRR.
This type was struck during the Persian siege of Jerusalem. The siege commenced in September 613 and terminated in the Persian occupation in May 614, well into Heraclius' 4th year of reign. It was undoubtedly struck due to a severe shortage of ordinary Byzantine copper coins during the siege. Jerusalem remained in Persian control until it was reconquered by Heraclius in 629. There are two subtypes, one with the mint name IEROCO for Jerusalem in the exergue, the other with the phrase XC NIKA. All are dated year 4, and there was no further coinage at Jerusalem during the Persian occupation.
Estimate $9,000-10,000

INDIA: bimetallic 10 rupees, 2004, pattern in original packaging, labeled Unity in Diversity, Brilliant Unc, RRR.

After its approval, a few inaugural sets were issued with this presentation pack. None others were ever struck dated 2004 and the type was never produced for regular circulation. A few pieces also exist dated 2005, but there was no known presentation packaging for that year. The issue was produced for circulation in 2005-2007, with the mark of the Noida mint, replaced by a new design in 2008. This is one of the highest rarities of modern Indian coinage of the Republic.
