Item No. 100543 ZANGIDS OF SINJAR: Fath al-Din 'Umar, 1219-1220, AE dirham (10.79g) (Sinjar), DM, A-1881, SS-84, bust right, gazing upward, overstruck on type #859.2 of the Ayyubid al-Ashraf Musa, crude Fine to Very Fine, RRR. The obverse die closely resembles the example illustrated by Spengler & Sayles, probably a different die. Note the similarity for the words fath al-dunya in the obverse margin. Most or the reverse is illegible, due to poor quality striking. The host coin is the AH615 issue of Musa (Balog-853), which differs from the 617 issue (Balog-854) by the two triangular objects left and right of the cross-legged person's left and right knees. That object to the right is clear on this specimen. The reverse closely matches both the 615 & 617 reverses, but seems to be a different reverse die than any of the specimens illustrated by Balog. All examples of Fath al-Din 'Umar's coinage cite the Ayyubid Musa. I shall leave it to historians to deteremine whether this is an Zengid copper dirham overstruck on an Ayyubid dirham or vice versa. |
