Many were also darkened by heating to make them appear old. This was to gain acceptance in trade and to help avoid counterfeiting laws. They therefore can't be graded like a normally produced issue. According to Breton, this piece was struck in Germany to be used in a German club which met on St. Catherine Street. These were only used briefly and the unused balance (900 out of 1000 made), along with the defaced die, was sold to P. N. Breton.
