KANSU: cast brass 50 cash, ND (1919-24), issue of Governor Kong Fan Jing in the city of Tianshui, this example borrowing styles from various coins, the obverse has Zhong Hua Min Guo (Chinese Republic) above crossed Republican flags, jì niàn bì (memento coin) below / wu shih wen (50 cash) within wreath, er , English legend around THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA in large letters, crude Extremely Fine, ex. Viking Collection, Hong Kong Auction 47, lot 668 (part).
In order to pay troops and purchase supplies warlords minted their own coins by making cast copies of various Republican types, mainly of types from neighboring Sichuan province. These Gansu coins were issued between 1914 and the mid 1920s when a formal mint was established and the province began to issue its own coinage. These coins were cast from brass recovered by melting imperial Chinese cast cash coins which were still in circulation. Since one 100 cash coin could be made from the brass contents of six single cash coins, the enterprise was quite profitable for the warlord. The coins are crudely cast, with a considerable variation in styles and sizes. View details and enlarged photos
