Item 36308		FRENCH GUIANA: AR 1½ euro, 2004, KM-—, pattern essai, warship Le Soleil Royal 1670-92, Brilliant Uncirculated. You are bidding on a 2004 dated silver 1½ euro pattern coin struck for the departement de la Guyane, a French overseas possession located in South America. The obverse features the Guyanan coat of arms. The theme is the history of the French Navy and this coin portrays the Louis XIV's flagship the Soleil Royal. The Soleil Royal (1670) Flagship of the French Fleet with 104 guns, was launched - some say in 1690, others in the 70's - to join the relentless battles going on the Mediterranean. In 1692, under the command of A.H. de Cotentin, Count of Tourville and Marshal of France, she left the port of Brest on 12th May with a squadron of 45 ships. On 29th May she found herself some 20 miles from the Cape of Barfleur in the North East, facing a fleet of 97 British and Dutch vessels. After a merciless fight lasting 12 hours, the British and Dutch were forced to flee after suffering substantial losses. The Soleil Royal and two other vessels were careened for repairs on the beach at Cherbourg. A defenseless target, she was burned during the British and Dutch attack on 2nd and 3rd June 1692. One year later, the Count of Tourville, again at sea, won a brilliant victory at Cape St-Vincent on 27th June 1693, capturing 59 British ships. You are bidding on a 2004 dated silver ¼ euro pattern coin struck for the departement de la Guyane, a French overseas possession located in South America. The obverse features a portrait of the French medallist, Louis Oscar Roty, 1846-1911. The reverse features a vignette from his 1892 silver plaque for the 50th anniversary of the foundation of "Christofle." Charles Christofle (1805-63) was a silversmith and established his internationally-renowned business in 1842. Louis-Oscar Roty (1846-1911) studied painting as well as sculpture and was pupil to Lecoq de Boisboudran, Dumont and Ponscarme. In 1872 Roty competed for the Prix de Rome for which he received a second prize award, from 1873 he exhibited at the Salon. Roty received the Grand Rrix de Rome in 1875 and spent three years in Italy before returning to Paris. In 1888 he was appointed professor and in 1897 President of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1889 he was awarded a Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle in Paris and was created Officer of the Legion of Honor the same year. In 1905 he received a medal of honour at the Salon. He became a Commander of the Legion of Honor which crowned a very successful career. His works are to be found in all European museums, a great number of his medals and plaquettes can be viewed in the Kunsthalle Hamburg and the Musée Oscar Roty in Jargeau/France. He his probably best known in France and around the world for his 1898 engraving of "Semeuse (the Sower)" which graced French coins for nearly a century. You are bidding on a 2004 dated silver ¼ euro pattern coin struck for the French Southern and Antarctic Territories - Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (TAAF), an overseas territory of France, established in 1955, that consists of several groups of islands in the southern Indian Ocean and a sector of Antarctica that is claimed by France. The Antarctic territory is called Adélie Coast (Terre Adélie). It includes the area between 136° and 143° east longitude south of the Antarctic Circle and is about 389,000 km2 (150,200 mi2) in area. A staffed research station is located at Base Dumont d'Urville. The island components include the Kerguelen Islands, a group of one large and some 300 small islands, with a total area of about 7,000 km2 (2,700 mi2); the Crozet Islands, consisting of 5 large and 15 tiny islands, with a combined area of about 300 km2 (116 mi2); St. Paul Island, which is about 7 km2 (2.7 mi2); and Amsterdam Island (Nouvelle-Amsterdam), with an area of 60 km2 (23 mi2). You are bidding on a 2004 dated silver 1½ euro pattern coin struck for the departement de la Guadelouope, a French overseas possession located in the Caribbean sea. The obverse features the Martinique coat of arms. The theme is the history of the French Navy and this coin portrays the first ironclad warship, the Gloire which entered service in 1860 and served until 1879. La Gloire (Battleship, 1860-1879) Broadside ironclad ship (3m). L/B/D: 255.6 × 55.9 × 27.10 (77.9m × 17m × 8.5m). Tons: 5,630 disp. Hull: ironclad wood. Comp.: 550. Arm.: 36 × 6.4. Armor: 4.7 belt. Mach.: 2-cycle trunk, 2,500 ihp, 1 screw; 12.5 kts. Des.: Stanislas Dupuy de Lôme. Built: Arsenal de Toulon; 1860. One of the first tests of the effectiveness of ironclad ships in battle conditions occurred during the Crimean War. Impressed especially by their performance against Russian defenses at Fort Kinburn at the mouth of the Dnieper River, the French Navy embarked on a program of building ironclad warships. In this, it was strongly supported by Napoleon III. Appointed naval constructor in 1857, Stanislas Dupuy de Lôme completed plans for six ironclads in 1858. La Gloire, the first of these, was essentially a modification of his design for the world's first steam screw warship, Napoleon of 1850. Because of their relatively weak industrial base, the French were unable to build an iron-hulled ship. The compromise reached in Gloire was for a wooden hull clad with 4.7-inch iron plate and heavily reinforced with iron fastenings. With a single iron deck, Gloire was a single-screw three-masted ship mounting thirty-six 6.4-inch muzzle-loading rifled guns. Designed to operate as a battleship in a traditional battle line, Gloire had two sister ships, Invincible and Normandie. These were joined by the iron-hulled Couronne and the ten ships of the Flandre-class (one of which, Heroïne, had an iron hull), as well as the two-decker ironclads Magenta and Solferino, mounting 50 guns on two decks. Laid down in May 1858 and commissioned in July 1860, Gloire served in the French fleet for nine years before undergoing a thorough overhaul and refit, emerging with six 9.6-inch and two 7.8-inch muzzle-loading rifled guns. In 1879, she was struck from the navy list and broken up four years later. Far from helping the French achieve naval superiority over the British, Gloire prompted the conservative British to undertake the development of their own iron ships. No sooner was Gloire laid down than the Admiralty promptly ordered two ironclad and four iron ships of their own. The immediate result was HMS Warrior, an all-iron-hull warship that entirely dwarfed Gloire and ushered in a new generation of fighting ship.
