One of Jean de Grailly's forebears, another Jean, but better known as the Captal de Buch, fought at Poitiers for the Black Prince. The type is a continuation of the immobilized deniers of the Centulles, but this type is quite rare in comparison. The cow was one of the armorial devices of Béarn and became more prominent on later coinage.
