Goron, Stan & Goenka, J.P., Coins of the Indian Sultanates, New Delhi, 2001, 564 pages with photos throughout, hardcover with dust jacket. The coinage of the Indian Sultanates is a very important primary source for helping us to understand the political and economic history of much of what is now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh during the period from the beginning of the thirteenth century AD until the seventeenth century when the last of the sultantes, that of Bijapur, was absorbed in the Mughal Empire. The right of sikka, i.e., the right to strike coins was one of the two juridically recognised expressions of the right of the ruler to sovereignty, and it was a right that was jealously guarded. It is a happy feature of Islamic coinage that the coins bear information not only about the rulers names and titles but very often also the place and date of minting. In this way we can follow the progress of theri rule as their territories expanded or contracted. We can learn of rulers who are otherwise not known to history, their usually ephemeral reigns not recorded in any literary sources that have come down to us. It is an extensive, illustrated catalogue of coin types. More types are included here than in any previously published book on sultanate coins. Many are published for the first time. They come from both public and private collections in India and elsewhere. Brief histories are included for each sultanate as well as comments on the coinage and the coin legends. An extensive bibliography is also provided. This book will serve as an essential reference for students and collectors of Indian sultanate coins and for anyone else interested in this period of South Asian history. Heiss, Aloiss, Descripcion General de las Monedas Hispano-Cristianas desde la Invasion de los Arabes: Tomos 1-3, in three volumes, originally published in Madrid, 1865-1869, reprinted in Zaragoza, 1962, volume I (433 pages), volume II (502 pages), volume III (298 pages), Spanish text. The old standard reference on post-Islamic Spain. The coin descriptions include full legends, and there are wonderful line drawings of the coins. A great reference that has not been replaced by more modern references like Cayon and Castan. The reprint is very well done. View details and enlarged photo

Henderson, J. R., The Coins of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan, Madras, 1921, 123 pages, 9 plates, hardcover (this, the orginial printing). A catalogue of the coins of Mysore in southern India from 1761-1799. There is a decent historical introduction, followed by a catalogue of really good descriptions of the coins. The coins of Haidar Ali are arranged by type, while those of Tipu Sultan, a much more extensive series, is arranged by mint. The section on Tipu Sultan has a good introduction explaining the mints, dates, names of cyclical years, names of months, letter year, and denominations/names of coins. The photographic plates are actually quite good. Museum-style catalog with numismatic history, fairly comprehensive and decent plates. View details and enlarged photo
