Lot 949

Item 105170
CHAPANID: Malik Ashraf, 1344-1356/57, AR dinar (2.12g), Kashan, ND, A-2274M, about 35% flat strike on obverse, less so on reverse, but the name shah malik ashraf is fully clear, as is the mint name, Very Fine, RRR.

Although Malik Ashraf was actually in charge of the Tabrizi region of the former Ilkhan kingdom, all coins, with the exception of this type, were struck in the name of the second-from-last Ilkhan ruler, Anushirawan, a mere figurehead in a kingdom actually controled by Malik Ashraf. The only explanation for this coin in his name is that the authorities at Kashan chose to recognize Malik Ashraf formally, perhaps a declaration of independence between Anushirawan and the Injuyid opponent, Abu Ishaq, who struck coins at Kashan AH747-756, with a break in the early 750s. This issue is undated, but may have been struck in the early 750s.
This is the second reported specimen, the first in the official collection at the University of Tübingen, Germany.

Lot 952

Item 99437
SUTAYIDS: Undetermined ruler, fl. 1349-1350, AV dinar (3.75g), Irbil, AH750, A-2319G, unpublished and probably unique, Extremely Fine, RRRR.

The Sutayids were a minor branch of the Uyrat Mongols who came to Iraq during the Ilkhan period, founding their briefly surviving dynasty in northern Iraq after the death of Abu Sa'id in AH736. Their capital was at Irbil, now in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq. Silver coins were minted at Irbil, also at al-Mawsil (Mosul), 'Aqar and Sinjar. They surrendered to the Jalayrids shortly after AH750.
The first ruler of the Sutayids, Ibrahimshah, died or was expelled in AH748. I have been unable to find a reference to his successor.
