Lot 1605

Item 203779
FRENCH INDIA: AR rupee (11.39g), "Arkat", AH(11)83 year 16. KM-53. In the name of Shah Alam II, characterized by the trident in the S of jalus, VF to EF, RRR, ex Paul Stevens Collection.
Estimated Value$250 - 350.

Listed in KM under the state of Arcot, with the comment "may have been struck by a European company", as the trident of this style appears on Machhlipattan rupees in the names of Ahmad Shah & Alamgir II. The mint name appears to be sârkârat, intentionally confounding the word "sarkar" (government) with the city name Arkat (Arcot). A similar example, but without legible date & regnal year, sold at Stephen Album Auction 20, Lot 1377, for $200.
