Lot 650

Item 207196
GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AV dinar (4.50g), MM, AH623. A-1964. Zeno-69223 (same dies). Obverse text chingiz / khan al-'adil / al-a'zam, standard kalima on reverse (part of Qur'an 9:33 in reverse margin), about 20% flat strike, as normal for this series, the second known specimen of this variety, VF, RRRR.
Estimated Value$3,500 - 4,500.

The Zeno specimen, the only other known example, helps with part of the inscription, but lacks the mint name & date. The style suggests Samarqand, though Petrov thinks it must be something else. Hopefully some day a third example will be discovered that reveals the mint name.

Item 208220
GREAT MONGOLS: Chingiz Khan, 1206-1227, AR dirham (3.11g), [Ghazna], ND. A-1967. Inscribed al-'adil / al-a'zam / chingiz khan, thus citing Chingiz Khan by name, Zeno type A2/B2, lovely bold strike, EF, R.
Estimated Value$1,000 - 1,200.

It has recently been suggested that this type was not necessarily struck at Ghazna, but by the Mongol military after it departed from Ghazna when chasing Mangubarni towards the Indus River, with minting equipment brought along from Ghazna.

Lot 667

Item 207197
GREAT MONGOLS: Möngke, 1251-1260, AV dinar (2.95g), Tabas, ND. A-T1977. Obverse text al-khaqan / al-'adil al-a'zam / mangu khan / tabas, reverse standing kalima followed by the caliph al-Nasir il-Din (Allah), minimal traces of marginal legends, typical crude strike with relatively little weakness, believed to be unique and of great importance, VF to EF, RRRR.
Estimated Value$1,200 - 1,600.

In my opinion, all issues bearing the title al-khaqan may have been struck 15-25 years before Möngke, during the last years of Chingiz Khan or slightly later, as none of the coins confirmed for Ögedei and his Great Mongol successors bear that title, always either qâ'ân or qân. The legend mangu khan could be a version of the name Möngke with the title khân, or the equivalent of the phrase mangu khani that means "khan's money" or "khan's coin", first cited on copper dirhams in the name of Chingiz Khan at Samarqand, dated AH624. This is one of only two examples that bear a mint name, the other Zeno-68443 with the mint name tentatively read as Tun, a city of some importance not far from either of the two cities named Tabas, both in south central Khorasan.
