Lot 1298

SIKH EMPIRE: AR nanakshahi rupee (11.15g), Amritsar / Mehta? VS(18)43 year 318. KM-A20.3. Herrli-01.05.04, mismatched date (should be year 316 for VS1843), both dates boldly clear, unpublished, bold VF, RRR.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

The reverse of this piece is sufficiently off center to reveal the extra word above the mint name Amritsar, and it has been suggested that it reads mehta for the city by that name located about 20 miles away from Amritsar, a location of considerable importance for the Sikh Empire at the time this coin was struck.

Work by Gurprit Gujral, so be published shortly, has revealed that the word on the top of the reverse is "sobha", which means "magnificent", an extremely rare issue minted at Amritsar, known dated VS1841 and 1843, and not until very recently recognized as a significant separate type.

Realized $500
