Lot 84

Item 95663
OTTOMAN EMPIRE: Mehmet II, 1451-1481, AR 10 akçes (8.74g), Kostantiniye, AH(8)75, A-1307, NP-82, Very Fine, RRR.

This coin represents the first attempt by the Ottomans to introduce a large-size silver coin for regular circulation, but the project was very quickly abandoned. The next attempt occurred during the reign of Süleyman I (AH926-974), who introduced silver "dirhems" at Syrian & Iraqi mints, in the range of 3.0-4.5 grams. No large silver coinage was struck at Kostantiniye until Süleyman II, dated AH1099, thus more than two centuries later.

Lot 85

Item 96694
OTTOMAN EMPIRE: Jem Sultan, 1481, AR akçe (0.74g), Bursa, AH8(86), A-1310, somewhat off-center strike, some corrosion, Fine, RRR.

Upon the death of Mehmet II on 3 May 1481, his two sons, the younger Cem Sultan and the older Bayezit, each claimed the succession. Cem Sultan at first defeated Bayezit and declared his independence at Bursa on 28 May 1481, but was defeated a few weeks later and fled to Cairo. These coins were undoubtedly struck during those few weeks that Cem Sultan "ruled" at Bursa. Cem Sultan attempted to regain control during the following year and was quickly defeated, but managed to flee to the Knights of St. John before Bayezit could arrest him. The Knights sent him to France, but several years later, in 1489, he was turned over to Pope Innocent VIII. He died in Capula in Italy in 1495.
